ABOUT

Welcome! My name is Nick James. I like to consider myself an “avid drum nerd.”  Playing music is my favourite thing in the whole world! I started playing drums in my high school’s music program and in the first several years of playing I learned many songs, performed in bands and even recorded a few records.

Through all of this I was almost exclusively self-taught, but by the time I was in my early 20’s I felt l needed more of an understanding of what I was doing in order to progress and improve. I read many books on rhythm, watched countless hours of educational drum DVD’s and started studying privately. All of this prepared me for an opportunity to teach drums myself, which has become one of the biggest passions of my adult life.

In my mid 20’s I was introduced to Jazz music, which I had heard of but never really listened to, and became very inspired by it. Taking a small amount of private instruction, listening to tons of records acquired from my local library and sitting in at local jazz performances, I was able to create my own unique approach to playing jazz drums.

Since then I’m thankful to say that along side teaching, I’m also a sought after performer for hire in many different bands in the lower mainland, in a wide variety of styles. I’m still a highly active student of music, continuing to further my knowledge of drums and rhythm.

My Teaching Style

Out of all the avenues for learning to play the drums, why choose me? I can sum it up in three words… Efficiency, Injury and Compassion. Let me explain.

Efficiency; I’ve always been interested in how to get better at playing drums as quickly and efficiently as possible. There’s no substitute for time and practice, but if we know what to practice by breaking things down to the core building blocks, we can improve as efficiently as possible. I’ve studied many methods in my near 20 years of playing and have found the building blocks to everything we can do on the drums. Think there’s probably a lot right? In my curriculum there’s only 30 building blocks. Yep you read that right, only 30 building blocks of anything and everything you can possibly do on the drums. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player, I’d love to teach you my approach to help you play whatever you want on the drums in the most direct way possible.

Injury; A few years ago I got into a car accident and the injuries I sustained have made it hard to play. I started working with a physiotherapist to help deal with the injuries and learned a lot about the body along the way! I’ve been able to take this knowledge and combine it together with all the drum knowledge I learned to create a unique understanding and approach to drum set techniques. Learning how our bodies work and working with what we’ve got can help us unlock our ability to play the instrument comfortably, with as little effort as possible and with no worry of future injury or aggravating old ones.

Compassion; When I was younger I was constantly frustrated with my improvement (or lack of) on the drums. I played drums everyday and never felt like I was getting better. I thought “Maybe I’m practicing wrong” and asked one of my first drum teachers about how to practice. His response was “If you don’t know how to practice you should probably just quit”. True story! This made me do two things, immediately stop taking lessons from that teacher and start a deep dive into what “practice” really is. I’ve learned a lot about practice since then. About how to have a healthy balance of practice and play. How make a routine that will fit even the busiest of schedules. How to have patience with ourselves as our body learns new things. My goal is to teach all of this and more to my students so you can learn to love the process and be comfortable with wherever you are right now.

I realize that everyone is an individual, with individual goals and aspirations. My goal is not to teach you how to play like me, but rather to teach you how the instrument works and help you get wherever YOU want to go. You won’t find my kind of approach anywhere else. I’d love to help you improve your drumming skills in the most simple, straight forward and healthiest way possible. Looking forward to working with you!

Testimonials

“I’ve been playing drums for 15 years. I took one lesson with Nick with the intention of shaking up my playing a bit, and the dude totally blew my mind. Both from a rhythmic/theoretical standpoint, and from an ergonomic/economy of motion perspective. I’ve totally rethought how to approach and practice the instrument. Spend some time learning from this guy, even if you think you know what you’re doing.”

“We’ve been really happy with Nick teaching our daughter drums. Nick talks to her like a person, not a child, and never talks down to her. She has learned a lot, and Nick continues to encourage her to learn more in a very supportive way. “

"I really enjoy playing drums with Nick, He makes drums fun and makes you want to play drums more." "You make drumming so fun and it really inspires me how much you enjoys drums. I Idol you"

- Logan, Age 11, Student

"[My Daughter] has been training with Nick since she was 8 and now she's 11. It takes great effort to be a teacher more than to be a student. Nick is a cheerful person, with passionate energy, patience, great sense of humour and always encouraging to experiment with different rhythms and it's ok to make mistakes. Nicks musical knowledge, techniques and strategies used for teaching and overall being flexible and understanding are some of Nick's unique qualities."

- Mak, Client

“Nick is a really nice guy.  He has taught me a lot about drumming in a really short period of time.”

-Cordelia, age 11, Student

"Our son (8 years old) has been taking lessons with Nick for just over two years now.  Nick has a wonderful way of teaching young children.  He is patient and encouraging yet pushes him to play to the best of his ability.  Nick works to develop his musical knowledge while at the same time teaching him the mindset needed to succeed and reach any life goals, such as practice, perseverance and how to learn from his mistakes.  We have been very impressed with Nick!”
